The young prince, played by Tom Conti, is tired of frivolous women who care only about their looks and wealth. He wants a princess who is both kind-hearted and beautiful on the inside and outside. In an attempt to find the perfect bride, the prince and his loyal servant, played by Lenny Henry, set out on a quest to find a true princess.

After a long and arduous journey, the prince finally stumbles upon a ragged, wet, and bedraggled young woman who claims to be a princess. However, the queen, played by Carol Kane, is skeptical and believes that the girl is an imposter. In order to test her claim, the queen devises a test that will prove whether or not the girl is indeed a true princess.

Unbeknownst to the girl, the queen places a small pea under twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds. If the girl is truly a princess, the queen reasons, she will feel the discomfort of the pea and be unable to sleep soundly.

As the night progresses, the girl tosses and turns in her bed, unable to get comfortable. Despite the softness of the mattresses and the warmth of the feather beds, she cannot seem to get a good night's rest. The next morning, when asked how she slept, the girl tells the prince and queen that she had a terrible night's sleep and that something hard was in her bed. With this, the queen declares that the girl must truly be a princess and the prince happily asks for her hand in marriage.
