In Face Off season 9 episode 4, titled "Frightful Fiction," the competing artists are tasked with creating makeups inspired by classic horror literature. Each artist selects a piece of literature as inspiration, ranging from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to H.P. Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu.
The contestants must not only create a makeup that represents their literary selection, but also a backstory and character to go along with it. They must also consider the practicality of their design, as the makeups will need to withstand various challenges throughout the competition.
As usual, the judges are tough and offer harsh critiques, pushing the artists to do better and think outside the box. In addition to the main challenge, the contestants also participate in a spotlight challenge, in which they are given a short amount of time to create a makeup inspired by a genre of horror film.
Tensions run high as the artists struggle to bring their ideas to life, and some experience major setbacks along the way. The clock ticks down as they frantically apply prosthetics, paint, and other materials to their models, hoping to impress the judges and avoid elimination.
In the end, only a few artists will move on to the next round, while one unlucky contestant will be sent home. It's a high-pressure competition that tests the limits of creativity and skill, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats until the very end.
