In Face Off season 11 episode 2, titled The Devil Is in the Details, the remaining 14 artists are tasked with creating original demons inspired by a unique twist on the classic Tiki cocktail. Host McKenzie Westmore introduces the guest judge, Greg Nicotero, an award-winning special effects makeup artist known for his work on The Walking Dead.
The challenge begins with an opportunity for the artists to study and taste a variety of Tiki cocktails, each one paired with a different devilish inspiration. The artists must then sketch and present their demon designs to the judges for feedback before beginning work in the lab. While some artists struggle to adapt their visions to the challenge, others confidently dive in, eager to showcase their skills.
As they work, a variety of complications arise. Some artists find their makeup melting in the heat of the studio lights, while others struggle with incorporating unfamiliar materials like moss and feathers. Meanwhile, the judges pay close attention to the details of each creation, assessing everything from the balance of colors to the shape of the horns.
In the end, only three artists make it into the top looks: one whose unconventional approach sets him apart from the pack, one whose expertly crafted chin wig is the talk of the challenge, and another whose use of unexpected materials surprises the judges. The bottom looks feature two artists whose demons fall short due to lack of attention to detail and one whose design is simply too similar to a well-known pop culture character.
As always, the stakes are high as the judges deliberate on which artist has created the best and worst looks of the challenge. One artist is crowned the winner and earns immunity for the next challenge, while another is eliminated and forced to pack up their workstation for good. Amidst the triumphs and disappointments, the remaining artists gear up for whatever challenge comes their way next, ready to push themselves even further in pursuit of the coveted title of Face Off champion.
