The show stars Sean Bean in the lead role of Neil Byrne, a former soldier who has been released from prison after serving time for murder. The premise of the show revolves around Neil, who is recruited by the police to go undercover to infiltrate a gang of criminals. The gang, led by Rourke (played by Stephen Bent), is involved in a range of illegal activities, including drug trafficking and smuggling. Neil, who is desperate to prove his innocence and clear his name, sees this as an opportunity to redeem himself and make amends for his past mistakes.
The show begins with Neil's release from prison, where he reunites with his ex-wife Sarah (played by Dervla Kirwan) and their young son. However, Neil's happiness is short-lived when he is approached by Detective Inspector Steven Johnson (played by Ian McNeice), who offers him a deal to go undercover. Initially reluctant, Neil eventually agrees to the plan and soon finds himself deep in the criminal underworld.
Throughout the series, Neil has to navigate the dangers of his new life as a criminal, all while keeping his cover intact. He becomes increasingly entangled in the gang's operations and develops relationships with some of the criminals, including Rourke's wife, Lorna (played by Emily Joyce).
