Ep 7. Circus Train

  • December 23, 2008

In this episode of Extreme Trains, host Matt Bown sets out to explore the world of the traveling circus, as he hops aboard a special kind of train known as the "Circus Train." These enormous trains are designed to transport entire circuses from city to city, carrying everything from the performers and their equipment to the animals and their cages.

As Matt boards the Circus Train, he is immediately struck by the scope and size of the operation. The train is like a small city on wheels, with a complex network of cars and corridors serving a variety of different functions. There are cars for living quarters for the performers and crew, as well as cars for storing props, equipment, and animals. There's even a kitchen car and a dining car, where the circus workers gather to eat and socialize during the long journey.

Matt begins his journey by exploring the animal cars, where he meets some of the circus's star attractions. He gets up close and personal with lions, tigers, and elephants, learning about their care and feeding from the circus workers who accompany them. Matt is amazed at the level of care that goes into transporting these animals, from the spacious cages and climate-controlled environment to the staff who are on hand to ensure their safety and well-being.

As the Circus Train continues its journey across the country, Matt visits the various performance cars, where he gets to see some of the circus's incredible acts up close. He watches as performers practice their tightrope walking, juggling, and trapeze routines, and learns about the intense training and practice that goes into perfecting each act. Matt also learns about the history of the circus, from its roots in ancient Rome to its recent evolution into the modern-day spectacle that we know today.

Throughout his journey on the Circus Train, Matt is struck by the sense of community and camaraderie that exists among the circus workers. Despite the long hours and grueling work conditions, everyone on the train seems to be dedicated to putting on the best possible show for their audiences. The performers, in particular, have a deep respect and affection for the animals they work with, and Matt is moved by their genuine love and compassion.

As the Circus Train rolls into its next destination, Matt reflects on the incredible experience he has had. He has learned about the inner workings of the traveling circus, and has gained a new appreciation for the skill and dedication required to put on such a show. Most of all, he has been struck by the humanity of the circus workers, and the sense of passion and pride that they bring to their work each and every day.
