Extinct or Alive is a documentary series that follows biologist and explorer Forrest Galante as he travels the world in search of animals that are believed to be extinct. In season 2 episode 9, titled The Asian Unicorn, Galante heads to the remote forests of Vietnam to search for the elusive saola.
The saola, also known as the "Asian unicorn," is a little-known species of antelope that was discovered in 1992 in the rugged Annamite Mountains of Vietnam and Laos. It is one of the rarest and most enigmatic mammals in the world, with only a handful of sightings since its discovery.
Galante sets out on a challenging trek through the dense forests of the Annamite Mountains, facing rugged terrain and treacherous weather conditions along the way. He is joined by a team of local guides and experts, who help him navigate the area and search for any signs of the elusive saola.
As they make their way deeper into the forest, Galante and his team encounter a variety of other rare and endangered species, including the critically endangered Vietnamese pheasant and the Indochinese silvered langur. They also learn about the threats facing these animals and the efforts being made to protect them.
Despite their best efforts, Galante and his team are unable to find any concrete evidence of the saola during their expedition. However, they remain hopeful that the search will continue and that one day they will be able to bring this enigmatic species back from the brink of extinction.
The Asian Unicorn is a captivating episode that highlights the importance of conservation efforts and the ongoing battle to protect some of the world's rarest and most endangered species. Galante's passion for wildlife and his determination to uncover the truth behind these elusive creatures make for an exciting and inspiring journey that viewers won't soon forget.
