Expedition Unknown is back with an all-new season, and for the premiere of season 7, host Josh Gates is investigating one of the most mysterious and controversial discoveries of the 20th century - the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Mysteries of the Dead Sea Scrolls takes viewers on a journey to the Judean desert, where the ancient texts were first discovered in 1947 by a Bedouin shepherd. The scrolls, dating back more than 2,000 years, are considered to be one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century, containing the earliest known surviving copies of the Hebrew Bible.
Josh meets with experts and scholars who have spent years studying the scrolls, hoping to unravel the mysteries that still surround them. He visits the Israel Museum in Jerusalem to view the actual Dead Sea Scrolls, which are kept under the tightest security to ensure their preservation.
There are some who believe that the scrolls contain hidden secrets about the life of Jesus of Nazareth and that they could rewrite Christian theology. Josh speaks with scholars who argue that this theory is unlikely, as the scrolls do not mention Jesus by name and focus primarily on Jewish texts.
However, there are other secrets waiting to be uncovered. Josh learns about a mysterious code that was found within one of the scrolls, which some believe could be a secret message meant only for the initiated. He also investigates the controversy surrounding the ownership and authenticity of some of the scrolls, which has led to legal battles and accusations of forgery.
Josh's investigation also takes him to a high-tech lab, where he witnesses the process of digitally restoring and deciphering fragments of the scrolls that are too damaged to read with the naked eye. He also visits the Qumran Caves, where the scrolls were first found, and learns about the daily life of the Jewish sect known as the Essenes, who are believed to be the authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
As always, Josh's adventure is full of surprises and unexpected twists as he delves deep into one of the greatest mysteries of all time. Whether you're a history buff, a theology enthusiast, or just a lover of adventure, Mysteries of the Dead Sea Scrolls is sure to captivate and intrigue.
