Expedition Unknown: Search for the Afterlife is a thought-provoking exploration series that delves deep into the mysteries surrounding the afterlife. In the first episode of season 1 named "Heaven and Hell", the host, Josh Gates, takes the audience on a journey to explore different beliefs and theories about the idea of Heaven and Hell.

Gates begins his search by visiting the ancient site of Carthage, once a famous city in North Africa where the concept of the afterlife was a crucial factor in the culture. Gates meets with a group of Tunisian locals who have a unique perspective on the concept of the afterlife.

As the journey continues, Gates reaches his next destination – a small village in the foothills of the Himalayas. In this remote location, he meets a man who claims to have journeyed to Hell and back. The man gives an account of his trip, and his description of Hell is nothing short of terrifying. Gates listens carefully and tries to understand the man's experience, which is different from any other perspective about the afterlife that he has come across.

Next, Gates visits a group of nuns in Spain who have been studying the afterlife and its concepts for years. Their insights and research reveal that people first embarked on the journey of exploring the afterlife more than 3000 years ago. The research further indicates that people have always believed that the afterlife mirrors our lives here on earth.

As Gates continues his search for the afterlife, he visits a cave system in the Philippines, where he discovers a unique belief system – the concept of Purgatory. The locals believe that Purgatory is a place where your soul goes to purify before moving on to the afterlife. Furthermore, they believe that their rituals and sacrifices can help shorten the purification time needed by the soul.

Finally, Gates travels to Egypt to investigate the Egyptians' belief in the afterlife and the journey that their souls took from death to "The Field of Reeds." A place where one could live an eternal life of peace and plenty, free of suffering and want.

Throughout the episode, Gates encounters various beliefs and customs across different cultures, seeking to find common ground in what can be a very divisive concept. His exploration is insightful, educational and at times, riveting. The show's production is top-notch and captures the atmosphere of each location perfectly, keeping the viewers engaged throughout the episode.

Expedition Unknown: Search for the Afterlife: Heaven and Hell episode is perfect for those who want to learn more about different perceptions of the afterlife, its history, and how it influences various cultures. It's a fascinating journey that highlights the differences and similarities between cultures and illustrates how we, as humans, hold onto the hope that there is something beyond just this life.
