Ep 9. My Infamous Brother
- March 3, 2019
When people commit heinous crimes, the ripple effects can touch everyone around them. Season 5, episode 9 of Evil Lives Here, titled "My Infamous Brother," tells the story of a man who grew up with a sibling who would ultimately become a notorious criminal.
The episode follows the journey of a man named Tom, who had always looked up to his brother, Tim. Tim was older, stronger, and more confident, and Tom admired him for it. But as they grew older, Tom began to realize that Tim's bravado was a front for something darker. Tim had a history of drug abuse and criminal activity, and as time went on, his behavior only worsened.
Tom, on the other hand, was content with a quieter life. He got married, started a family, and focused on his career. But even as he distanced himself from his brother, he couldn't escape the aftermath of Tim's actions. When Tim was arrested for a brutal and senseless crime, Tom and his family were thrust into the public eye, forced to reconcile with the fact that they were related to a monster.
Throughout the episode, Tom recounts the painful memories of growing up with Tim and the moments that led up to his brother's arrest. He reflects on the guilt he feels for not doing more to intervene in Tim's spiral of self-destruction, and the shame he carries for carrying the same last name as a violent criminal. But perhaps most haunting of all are Tom's memories of the day he found out what his brother had done, and the gut-wrenching realization that he had been living next door to a murderer.
As with all episodes of Evil Lives Here, "My Infamous Brother" is not an easy watch. It's a poignant and often disturbing portrait of the way that evil can touch even those who are innocent. But it's also a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit: Tom's story is a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is always the possibility of healing and redemption.
