Raymond Barone is a sports journalist who lives with his family in Lynbrook, Long Island. He has a wife named Debra and three kids named Ally, Michael, and Geoffrey. His parents Frank and Marie Barone often drop in unannounced to visit. Raymond's older brother Robert is a police officer who is often jealous of Raymond's success.
In "Liars," the seventh episode of the eighth season of Everybody Loves Raymond, Ray and Debra are having brunch with their friends Bernie and Linda. Ray claims that he can tell if someone is lying just by looking at them, but Debra doesn't believe him. Ray decides to prove his ability by lying to Debra and making her think that his parents are lost in Manhattan. When Debra gets upset and calls her in-laws, she realizes that Ray was lying and gets angry with him.
Meanwhile, Robert is having trouble with his new girlfriend, Amy. They have been dating for a few months, and Robert is worried that she is not as serious about the relationship as he is. He confides in his sister-in-law, Debra, who suggests that he test Amy's love by pretending to be hurt. Robert takes her advice and fakes an injury, but Amy seems more interested in getting lunch than helping him. Robert breaks up with her, feeling relieved that he found out the truth before getting too invested in the relationship.
Back at the Barone household, Ray is still trying to convince Debra that he has a talent for spotting liars. He challenges her to take a test he found online, and she agrees. Ray watches Debra's every move as she answers the questions, but it's clear that he has no idea whether she's lying or telling the truth. Debra gets frustrated with Ray's inability to read her, and they start arguing.
The argument escalates when Debra accuses Ray of always thinking he's right and never admitting when he's wrong. Ray, feeling insulted, decides to leave the house and go for a walk. On his walk, he runs into his father, Frank, who seems to be lost. Frank asks Ray for directions, and Ray gives him some misleading ones just to mess with him. Frank eventually realizes that Ray is lying, and he gets angry with him.
When Ray returns home, he finds Debra waiting for him. She apologizes for doubting his ability to spot liars, and they make up. Ray confesses that he was lying about his parents being lost in Manhattan earlier in the day, and Debra forgives him. They hug and kiss, and the episode ends with the Barones laughing and happy once again.
