There is a Reaction is the second episode of season three in the American drama television series, Everwood. The show originally aired on September 27, 2004, and was created by Greg Berlanti. The series features the story of a single father, Dr. Andy Brown played by Treat Williams, who moves to the small town of Everwood from New York City with his two kids after the sudden death of his wife.
In this episode, as the school year begins, Bright (Chris Pratt) is far from enthused about his senior status and the fact he’ll be presenting an oral report in front of his entire class, so he turns to Ephram for academic help and gets a lot more than he bargained for when Ephram unwittingly drugs him. Meanwhile, Andy is arrested and held in jail overnight after fighting with Dr. Trott over a patient, and Delia (Vivien Cardone) is ecstatic when Andy hires her to assist at his office.
Ephram (Gregory Smith) has been working tirelessly on his music throughout the summer, but he is still struggling with the grief he feels over his decision to move away from Madison. He is also dealing with his father's new girlfriend, Amanda (Anne Heche), who is a constant reminder of the loss of his mother. Despite this, he is excited about the new school year and hopes to make new friends.
Bright, on the other hand, as a senior, is overwhelmed by the thought of presenting an oral report in his English class. He confides in Ephram, who suggests he use a drug that will help him feel less anxious. However, the drug he gives Bright has an unexpected reaction, causing chaos on the day of his presentation.
Meanwhile, Andy's temper flares when Dr. Trott goes against his medical advice for a patient, leading to a physical altercation in the hospital. Andy is arrested by the police and spends the night in jail. The incident causes tension between Andy and Amanda, who is disappointed in his inability to control his temper.
As the episode progresses, it is clear that Delia is thrilled to be working with her father at his medical practice. Andy is not so thrilled at first, but he soon realizes that having his daughter around brings a new perspective to his work, and their relationship strengthens as a result.
Overall, There is a Reaction is a well-rounded episode that shows the struggles and triumphs of the characters in their personal and professional lives. The continuing storyline of Ephram's struggles with the death of his mother and his relationship with his father is particularly poignant, while the tension between Andy and Amanda adds a layer of complexity to the show. Bright's journey as a senior in high school trying to navigate his way through academic pressures is also portrayed realistically, with a touch of humor thrown in.
