In ER season 7 episode 3, titled "Mars Attacks," the staff at County General Hospital are thrown into chaos when a group of young adults are brought in after ingesting a powerful hallucinogenic drug. The drug, which they obtained at a party, causes them to believe that they are under attack by aliens from Mars.
Dr. Carter (played by Noah Wyle) is at the center of the action, trying to coordinate the care for the four patients who are experiencing severe symptoms from the drug. Meanwhile, the ER is flooded with other patients who are suffering from a range of injuries, from broken bones to gunshot wounds.
As the chaos ensues, tensions rise between the staff members. Dr. Kovac (Goran Visnjic) clashes with the attending physician, Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston), over the best course of action for one of the patients. Dr. Weaver (Laura Innes) becomes frustrated with the constant stream of patients coming in and tries to get the other doctors to prioritize cases based on severity.
The situation becomes even more complicated when a group of protesters arrives in the ER, demanding that the hospital provide better care for uninsured patients. The protesters, led by a woman named Gloria (guest star Frances Fisher), refuse to leave until their demands are met. Dr. Pratt (Mekhi Phifer) tries to reason with Gloria and diffuse the situation, but tensions remain high.
As the night wears on, the staff members struggle to keep up with the ever-increasing demands on their time and resources. Dr. Carter is particularly affected by the events of the night, and his personal life begins to seep into his professional responsibilities.
Overall, "Mars Attacks" is a tense and frenzied episode of ER that showcases the challenges faced by doctors and nurses when a hospital is stretched to its limits. The episode also touches on larger societal issues, such as the problems faced by uninsured patients and the often-overwhelming responsibilities faced by healthcare providers.
