When a family tragedy strikes, the doctors and nurses of County General Hospital are called upon to provide both medical and emotional support in the ER season 3 episode titled "Faith."
The episode opens with Dr. Benton (Eriq LaSalle) arriving at the hospital to find his young nephew, Jesse, in critical condition. Jesse's mother, Jackie, was driving him and his sister to school when their car was struck by a truck. Jackie is pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, and Benton is left to make the difficult decision about whether to take Jesse off life support.
Meanwhile, Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) and Nurse Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) treat a young boy, Joey, who has been injured in a fire. His father is also brought in and it becomes clear that he had started the fire in a drunken rage. Carter tries to convince Joey to open up about what happened, but the boy is too scared and traumatized to talk about it.
As the two storylines unfold, the doctors and nurses navigate their own personal struggles. Benton struggles with the decision about his nephew, and ultimately turns to his estranged father for guidance and comfort. Hathaway faces questions about her relationship with Dr. Ross (George Clooney) when he becomes jealous of a handsome firefighter who she is treating.
As the episode concludes, viewers are left with a sense of hope and faith in the resilience of the human spirit. The doctors and nurses of County General Hospital may face difficult and trying situations, but they never fail to rise to the occasion and provide the care and compassion their patients need to heal both physically and emotionally.
