Dr. Kovac faces a difficult decision when an elderly woman with a serious heart condition comes to the ER. Her husband has advanced Alzheimer's and their daughter wants her mother to have a risky surgery that could potentially save her life. However, Kovac must weigh the risks and the potential harm that could be caused to the patient. Meanwhile, a young patient with a rare genetic disease seeks out Abby's help with a medical procedure that could potentially cure her. However, when complications arise during the procedure, Abby is left to make a decision that could have life-altering consequences for the patient. Elsewhere, Sam and Gates work to find the cause of a boy's mysterious illness, but their investigation leads them to a shocking discovery.
