In ER season 10 episode 13, titled "Get Carter," the show centers around Dr. John Carter, played by Noah Wyle, as he navigates through a personal and professional crisis. The episode opens with Carter's grandfather, Milburn Carter, coming to the hospital for a routine check-up. After examining him, Carter discovers that his grandfather's cancer has returned and is now terminal.
As Carter tries to provide comfort and support to his grandfather, he must also deal with the sudden arrival of Kem, his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child. Kem has flown in from Africa, where she had been working as a doctor, to tell Carter that their son has been taken away by the government due to her involvement with a political movement.
Carter is devastated by the news and feels helpless as he tries to figure out a way to get his son back. He leans on his colleagues in the ER for support, including Dr. Luka Kovac, played by Goran Visnjic, who encourages him to fight for his son and offers to help him in any way he can.
Meanwhile, the ER is inundated with patients, including a man who was hit by a train and brought in by a group of teenagers. The man is severely injured and requires immediate attention, causing tensions to rise among the medical staff as they work to save his life.
In addition to the train accident victim, the ER also sees patients with a range of other ailments, from a woman with a ruptured ovarian cyst to a man who fainted after taking Viagra. The staff works tirelessly to treat everyone, but the chaos of the night takes a toll on everyone.
As the episode comes to a close, Carter is able to reunite with his son, and his grandfather passes away peacefully in the hospital. The emotional rollercoaster of the night has left everyone exhausted but grateful for the support of their colleagues and the ability to make a difference in the lives of their patients.
Overall, "Get Carter" is a poignant episode that deals with themes of love, loss, and the importance of family. The performances by the cast, particularly Noah Wyle, are exceptional, and the fast-paced action in the ER keeps viewers engaged throughout.
