As the title of the episode suggests, "Applied Sciences" moves the focus to the scientific side of things. Jo is still on a quest to figure out why and how Piper ended up on that beach with no memory, and in this episode, she enlists the help of some science whizzes to try and get to the bottom of it all.
Jo turns to her old friend Abby for help, and Abby brings along her ex, Chris. Abby and Chris were once married, but things went south after Abby became addicted to opioids following a car accident. Chris, a physicist, was a key witness in the prosecution of the doctor who prescribed Abby the opioids and lost his job as a result.
Despite their rocky past, Abby and Chris seemingly put their issues aside to help Jo. They begin by analyzing a piece of metal that Jo found near Piper when she first appeared. The metal is unlike anything they've seen before, and they conclude that it's not from Earth.
As they work to figure out what the metal is and where it came from, Jo begins to have doubts about how much she can trust Abby and Chris. Abby's addiction issues have caused her to make some questionable decisions in the past, and Jo worries that she might be putting her faith in the wrong people.
Meanwhile, Piper continues to display some strange abilities. She's able to see things from afar and determine the chemical makeup of objects just by looking at them. She also has a strange encounter with a bird that leaves her shaken.
Elsewhere, Alex is still struggling to accept the fact that he's not really Piper's father. He's also dealing with the fallout from the incident at the barn, where he shot and killed a man who was trying to kidnap Piper. He's on administrative leave from the police department, and he's struggling to cope with the guilt and trauma of what happened.
As the episode progresses, it becomes clear that the piece of metal is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the strange and otherworldly phenomena surrounding Piper. Jo, Abby, and Chris race against the clock to unravel the mystery, but they might be in over their heads.
"Applied Sciences" is a tense and suspenseful episode that raises more questions than it answers. It's clear that the show is building towards a big payoff in the season finale, and this episode sets the stage for what is sure to be an explosive conclusion.
