In El Presidente season 1 episode 2, titled "Rosarito," viewers are taken on a journey that begins with football legend Sergio Jadue's smooth ascension to the presidency of the Chilean Football Association (ANFP) and ends with his inevitable downfall.
The episode focuses on the aftermath of the FIFA scandal that rocked the world of football in 2015. Sergio's closest friend, Jose Luis Sierra, has been implicated in the scandal, and Sergio frantically tries to cover up the evidence tying him to his friend. But the situation spirals out of control when the FBI announces that they will be investigating the ANFP's role in the scandal.
As the investigation intensifies, Sergio becomes increasingly paranoid, fearing he will be implicated in the scandal and lose everything he has worked so hard for. He turns to his confidante, Jorge, for advice, but his agenda may not necessarily be aligned with Sergio's best interests.
Meanwhile, Maria, Jose's wife, struggles to come to terms with her husband's wayward behavior and the prospect that he may be going to jail. Her mental health deteriorates, and she grows increasingly erratic.
As if things weren't bad enough, an unexpected visitor from Sergio's past arrives, pulling him further into a web of deceit and corruption. The visitor has photographic evidence of some dubious financial dealings between Sergio, Jorge, and a football club, and threatens to go public with it if Sergio doesn't pay up.
This episode is a rollercoaster ride of emotions, with Sergio struggling to come to terms with the consequences of his actions, Maria's deteriorating mental health taking center stage, and an unexpected twist that leaves viewers on edge. Throughout the episode, we see the lengths to which Sergio is willing to go to protect himself and his friends, all the while trying to convince himself that he is not entirely corrupt.
"Rosarito" proves to be a turning point for Sergio, setting the stage for more drama and intrigue in future episodes. The episode is well-paced, with the tension increasing steadily as the FBI investigation looms ever closer, and the characters' motivations become increasingly complex. Overall, it is an excellent installment in the series.
