El Chapo Season 2, Episode 1: Episode 1
In the opening episode of the second season of El Chapo, we find the notorious drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán (portrayed by Marco de la O) in a high-security prison in Altiplano, Mexico. Having escaped from prison before, security measures around him are tighter than ever before. Despite this however, a plan is quickly put into motion to free El Chapo from his cell. The initial stages of the plan are implemented successfully, but as soon as things begin to get complicated, the situation quickly devolves into chaos.
Meanwhile, in Juarez, ‘El Cano’ (portrayed by Rodrigo Abed), one of the most important leaders of the Juarez Cartel, and his men are preparing to smuggle a truckload of cocaine into the United States. El Cano’s operation is designed to thwart the DEA at every turn, and as he moves closer to his goal, things begin to unravel in unexpected ways. El Chapo is also following El Cano’s movements closely, and he sees an opportunity to take control of the Juarez cartel by forging an alliance with El Cano. But when their initial meeting goes awry, tensions flare between the two cartels.
In Mexico City, attorney Verónica Castro (portrayed by Cristina Michaus) is dealing with the aftermath of her controversial defense of El Chapo in his previous trial. Her reputation is in tatters, her law firm is struggling, and her secretary Rosario (portrayed by Laura Osma) seems to be the only one who still believes in her. But when Verónica is approached by an anonymous informant with insider information about the Sinaloa Cartel, she sees an opportunity for redemption. As she begins piecing together the clues from her source, she finds herself drawn deeper into the world of El Chapo than she ever imagined.
As the episode progresses, the various threads begin to weave together, leading to a tense standoff between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Juarez Cartel.
