Duncanville is back with its second season and its sixth episode called "Annie Oakie." The animated series follows the life of a 15-year-old boy, Duncan, who lives with his family in a nondescript town in the United States. The show tackles relevant themes like family, school life, and adolescent angst.
In this episode, we see Duncan getting excited about the upcoming school trip to the Wild West museum. As an avid fan of the old American frontier, he is thrilled to see the exhibits and learn more about the legendary figures that shaped the Wild West. However, he is also a bit nervous as he doesn't know anyone in his group. Meanwhile, his sister, Kimberly, is experiencing a painful toothache but refuses to go to the dentist, and Jack, their dad, is trying his best to support her.
Duncan's excitement is short-lived as he is paired with his arch-nemesis, Mia, for the school trip. For Duncan, it is a nightmare come true, stuck with the one person who knows how to push his buttons the most. Motivated to make the best of the situation, Duncan tries his best to get along with Mia, but her sarcastic remarks and crude behavior make it impossible.
As they reach the museum, the students are divided into groups for the tour. Duncan and Mia are paired with a few other students. During the tour, they see exhibits on various legendary figures like Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, and Jesse James. However, as they move from room to room, Duncan realizes that it's not just the exhibits that are legendary but his classmates too. They each have their unique stories and skills, which fascinate Duncan. He develops an appreciation for the people around him and starts to see them in a different light.
Meanwhile, at home, Jack takes it upon himself to fix Kimberly's toothache. His attempts at home remedies fail miserably, and it's only when Annie Oakley (yes, the legendary figure herself) appears to him in a dream, he realizes that he needs to take Kimberly to the dentist. Jack wakes up with newfound wisdom and takes Kimberly to the dentist to get her teeth pulled. Though a little groggy, Kimberly is grateful that her pain is over.
Back at the Wild West museum, Duncan and Mia find themselves lost in a maze-like exhibit, which is modeled after Jesse James' hideout. Soon they realize that they are not alone and bump into a group of outlaws who have also been lost for hours. Together, they decide to find their way out, and along the way, they each show their unique skills, which help them navigate the maze. Through this experience, Duncan and Mia begin to bond and find common ground.
In the end, the group finds their way out of the maze, and Duncan is filled with gratitude towards his classmates. He realizes that he has learned more about them in a few hours than he ever has in the classroom. The episode ends with Duncan returning home and feeling closer to his family than ever before.
"Annie Oakie" is a heartwarming and hilarious episode that shows the importance of looking beyond our own biases and assumptions and appreciating the people around us. The episode emphasizes the value of teamwork, empathy, and gratitude. Duncanville delivers another entertaining and thought-provoking episode that continues to impress with its smart writing and relatable characters.
