Mrs. Hughes receives a worrisome letter from an old friend, which prompts her to make a difficult decision. Meanwhile, Ethel attempts to make amends with Mrs. Hughes and receives an offer of help from Isobel. Isobel also continues to work on improving the lives of the local prostitutes and is met with resistance from some members of the community.
At Downton, Lord Grantham faces a potential crisis with the family estate as unexpected expenses arise. Matthew and Tom attempt to come up with a solution, but their ideas clash with Lord Grantham's traditional views. Rose, the Crawley's rebellious relative, returns to Downton and causes a stir among the family and their staff.
Upstairs, Lady Mary and Matthew's marriage is put to the test as they struggle to conceive a child.
