Mrs. Patmore, the house cook, is not her usual self as she seems to be going through something strange. This development becomes clear to Mr. Carson, the butler, who is sympathetic and tries to help her in every way he can, even if it means going out of his way. He sends her to see an ophthalmologist in London who recommended she undergo eye surgery following a thorough examination. Mrs. Patmore is hesitant and scared, but Mr. Carson reassures her that everything will be fine and convinces her to go to London for the operation.
Meanwhile, Mary finally gets back to Downton with baby George and her sister Edith in tow. However, things are not the same as they used to be. Mary is still in deep mourning over her husband's untimely demise and finds it extremely difficult to come to terms with it. She feels guilty for not being able to save him and blames herself for his death. The arrival of her aunt Rosamund only makes things worse, as she tries to be supportive but ends up asking Mary to move on.
As for Edith, she finds herself increasingly attracted to the editor of a local newspaper named Michael Gregson. She starts seeking his company, but he always seems to be busy with work. When she finally finds a chance to speak with him privately, he tells her he is actually married but his wife is in an asylum where she has been for years. Edith is crestfallen but still holds on to hope.
On the other hand, Tom Branson, the former family chauffeur, is having difficulties and feels like an outsider, as he is not used to being in his current social class. He confides in new footman Jimmy Kent, who seems more than happy to listen to his problems. Tom's daughter Sybil is also struggling to fit in, but there is some good news for the family when it is revealed that Sybil is pregnant, which is a joyous occasion for everyone.
There is also tension between Bates and Mrs. Anna Bates, which troubles the other staff members. They both seem distant and unhappy, and while Bates knows something is wrong, he is too scared to ask Anna what it is. Everyone else is trying to find out, but they cannot seem to get any answers, which worries them.
Lastly, Lord Grantham, the head of the household, is facing financial difficulties. He has invested a lot of money in a Canadian railroad company, which is now struggling. He tries to find a way out of this situation but does not confide in his wife or daughters about it, as he feels it would diminish his pride. He takes some risks to try and cover his losses, which could have a serious impact on the family.
