Downfall was a game show on ABC that premiered in June 2010. It was a unique show, in that contestants played on the roof of a 10-story building in downtown Los Angeles. The rules of the game were simple: the contestants had to answer trivia questions in various categories, trying to stay in the game as long as possible. Each correct answer earned a certain amount of money, which increased as the game progressed. However, there was a twist: as the game went on, portions of the roof would start to fall away, sending whatever was on them plummeting to the ground below.
The show was hosted by Chris Jericho, a professional wrestler and musician who had previously appeared on reality shows like Dancing With the Stars and Celebrity Apprentice. Jericho brought a fun and upbeat energy to the show, making jokes and keeping the contestants at ease even as the stakes got higher and higher.
In terms of gameplay, Downfall was divided into rounds. In the first round, there were four categories of questions, and the contestants had to choose which category they wanted to answer. Once a question was asked, the contestants had a limited amount of time to lock in their answer. If they got it right, they won whatever amount of money was attached to that question. If they got it wrong, they lost money.
In the second round, the categories were no longer labeled, and the questions were worth more money. Additionally, there was a bank of "safe" zones - blocks of the roof that wouldn't fall away, even if the contestants were standing on them. If the contestants answered correctly, they could choose to move to a safe zone and ensure that they wouldn't fall. However, if they chose incorrectly or ran out of time, they would be on a precarious portion of the roof that could fall away at any moment.
The third round was called the "Super Round", and it was the most high-stakes portion of the game. The questions were worth even more money, and the safe zones were few and far between. Additionally, the roof would start falling away more quickly, so contestants had to move fast to stay ahead of the game.
The final round was a showdown between the two remaining contestants. In this round, Jericho would ask a series of rapid-fire questions, and the contestants had to buzz in to answer. The first person to answer three questions correctly won the game and got to keep whatever money they had earned up to that point.
One of the most unique things about Downfall was its set design. The show was usually shot at night, and the downtown LA skyline made for a stunning backdrop. The roof of the building was covered in bright neon lights and game-related graphics, which lent the show a futuristic and exciting atmosphere. Additionally, the visual effects team did an excellent job of making the roof's collapse look realistic and dramatic.
While Downfall was ultimately short-lived - it only aired for one season - it was a fun and engaging show that appealed to fans of both game shows and action movies. The combination of trivia questions and physical challenges made for a unique gameplay experience, and Jericho was an excellent host who kept the energy level high throughout the entire show.
