Joe discovers Kate is having an affair with her colleague Philip White and wakes up to find himself in White's flat, where he finds White dead and Joe's name painted on the wall in blood. He panics and leaves the flat, but soon returns to remove all traces of himself. At home, he burns his clothes and shoes and is confronted by his son Seth, who saw him leave the flat.

A copycat killing from a real case he documented in one of his books, the immediate suspect is the man accused and acquitted of the original murder.
