Don Matteo (English subtitled) season 12 episode 13 "Thou Shalt Not Steal, Part 1" follows Father Don Matteo, a Catholic priest who also happens to be a detective, as he investigates a new case in the picturesque Italian town of Gubbio.
In this episode, Don Matteo is called to investigate a break-in at the local bank. The culprit stole a large sum of money from the vault, leaving the police baffled as to how they got inside. Don Matteo is skeptical about the supposed break-in and soon finds evidence that suggests an inside job.
One of the bank employees, Marco, is acting suspiciously and Don Matteo is convinced that he must be involved. However, Marco's boss, Luca, is insistent that his employee is innocent and forbids Don Matteo from investigating any further. Despite this, Don Matteo is determined to get to the bottom of the case and enlists the help of the local bishop, who uses his connections to give Don Matteo access to the bank's CCTV footage.
As they review the footage, they spot something suspicious - a shadowy figure sneaking into the bank the night of the break-in. Don Matteo is convinced that it must be Marco, but when they track him down, he has a seemingly air-tight alibi. Don Matteo realizes that in order to solve the case, he must identify who the shadowy figure is and why they were inside the bank.
As Don Matteo investigates further, he discovers that the bank is involved in a dubious investment scheme, and as he delves deeper, he uncovers a web of lies and deceit that leads him closer to the truth.
Throughout the episode, Don Matteo grapples with his moral obligations as both a priest and a detective. He must balance the need for justice and truth with forgiveness and redemption, all while navigating the trickier aspects of his job as a police liaison.
"Thou Shalt Not Steal, Part 1" sets the groundwork for what promises to be an intriguing and complex case, packed with twists and turns as Don Matteo strives to solve the mystery and bring the guilty party to justice.
