Don Dracula is a comedic anime series that aired in 1982. The story follows the titular character, a vampire named Don Dracula, who has taken up residence in Japan. Don Dracula is your typical aristocratic vampire; he is charming, elegant, and has a wicked sense of humor. However, he is also quite lazy and spends most of his time sleeping.
Don Dracula's quiet existence is suddenly interrupted when a young girl named Chocola comes to stay with him. Chocola is a member of a family of vampire hunters, and she is determined to rid the world of all vampires, including Don Dracula. Much to her surprise, however, Don Dracula turns out to be a fairly kind and harmless vampire who is content to live off of pig's blood.
The two quickly become unlikely friends, with Don Dracula teaching Chocola about the finer things in life, such as opera and fine dining. Meanwhile, Chocola tries to teach Don Dracula how to be a better vampire and how to avoid being hunted by her family.
Don Dracula's world is filled with a cast of eccentric characters, including a talking crow named Ga-chan who wants to become a vampire, a ghost who haunts Don Dracula's castle, and a group of werewolves who are constantly causing trouble. There are also several members of Chocola's family who make occasional appearances, including her overbearing mother who is determined to eradicate all vampires, and her bumbling father who is usually more of a hindrance than a help.
The episodes of Don Dracula are fairly self-contained, with each one having its own standalone story. Some episodes involve Don Dracula and Chocola getting into all sorts of wacky hijinks, while others focus more on the various supporting characters and their antics. There is a lot of slapstick humor throughout the show, and many of the jokes revolve around Don Dracula's inability to understand modern technology and customs.
One of the most notable aspects of Don Dracula is its animation style. The show utilizes a unique blend of traditional anime-style animation and hand-drawn watercolor backgrounds, giving it a distinctive look that sets it apart from many other anime shows of the time. The character designs are also quite memorable, with Don Dracula's flowing cape and top hat being particularly iconic.
While Don Dracula may not be as well-known as some of the other anime shows from the 80s, it has developed a small cult following over the years. Its blend of humor, horror, and whimsy make it a fun and entertaining watch, and its unique animation style is sure to catch the eye of anyone looking for something a little different. Whether you're a fan of classic anime or just looking for a quirky and offbeat comedy, Don Dracula is definitely worth checking out.
