In season 1 episode 12 of Dog Whisperer, titled Hank and Paris, renowned dog behaviorist Cesar Millan meets two very different dogs with unique challenges.
First up is Hank, a lovable but unruly pit bull who has been deemed too difficult to handle by his current owners. Hank has a reputation for escaping from his yard and causing trouble in the neighborhood, and his owners are at their wit's end with his bad behavior. Cesar observes that Hank is full of pent-up energy and suggests that his owners start giving him regular exercise to help alleviate his restlessness. He also shows them how to properly establish boundaries with Hank and provide him with consistent leadership.
Next, Cesar visits Paris, a timid and fearful Maltese who cowers in corners and refuses to come when called. Paris's owners are concerned about her lack of obedience and her tendency to hide or run away when approached. Cesar immediately recognizes that Paris's owners are inadvertently reinforcing her fearfulness by coddling her and babying her too much. He encourages them to practice tough love with Paris, gently but firmly insisting that she face her fears and learn to trust them as her pack leaders. Through a series of exercises and techniques, Cesar helps Paris gain confidence and learn to respond to her owners' commands.
Throughout the episode, Cesar reminds viewers that dogs need exercise, structure, and leadership in order to feel calm and secure. By showing Hank and Paris's owners how to provide these things, he helps them improve their relationships with their dogs and set them on a path toward better behavior.
