Doc Martin is a British television drama series that follows the life of Dr. Martin Ellingham, who moved to the fictional Cornish village of Portwenn to become the town's GP. In season 4 episode 1, titled "Better the Devil," viewers are reintroduced to the quirky and stubborn Doc, who is still struggling to get along with the town's residents.
The episode begins with Martin struggling to understand the nature of his relationship with Louisa (Caroline Catz). Martin had previously proposed to Louisa, but she had rejected him. Now, Martin is trying to decide if he should pursue her again.
Meanwhile, the town is preparing for the annual Portwenn Fun Day, a day of festivities and friendly competition. But tensions are running high between some of the residents, particularly between Bert Large (Ian McNeice) and his son, Al (Joe Absolom).
To complicate matters, Martin's Aunt Joan (Stephanie Cole) has fallen ill, prompting Martin to reluctantly take some time off from work to care for her. But when Aunt Joan's condition worsens, Martin must seek help from his nemesis, the local pharmacist, Mrs. Tishell (Selina Cadell).
As the day of the fun day approaches, Martin also steps in to help with some of the planning. But his attempts to be helpful are met with resistance from the rest of the planning committee, who see him as overbearing and bossy.
Despite these setbacks, the fun day proceeds as planned. But as the various competitions play out, tensions between Bert and Al reach a boiling point, leading to a dramatic confrontation in the middle of the town square.
In the end, Martin is able to diffuse the situation and bring some much-needed peace to the town. And while his relationship with Louisa remains uncertain, he begins to realize that his place in Portwenn might not be as precarious as he once thought.
Overall, "Better the Devil" is a charming and entertaining episode that showcases the wit and charm that have made Doc Martin a beloved television series. With its quirky characters, picturesque setting, and heartwarming moments, this season 4 premiere is sure to delight fans of the show and newcomers alike.
