Doc Martin season 3 episode 7, titled "In Sickness and in Health," follows the residents of Portwenn as they face a variety of health troubles - both physical and emotional.
The episode begins with Martin Ellingham, the titular character, receiving a surprise visit from his aunt Joan Norton. Joan, who has a history of heart problems, has come to Portwenn for a health checkup. As Martin examines her, he discovers that her condition has worsened and she requires urgent medical attention.
Meanwhile, Bert Large, the owner of the local restaurant, is struggling to come to terms with the fact that his son Al has been diagnosed with a life-changing illness. Al has always been a source of contention between Bert and his wife, and this news only serves to exacerbate their existing marital issues.
Elsewhere in town, Louisa Glasson, Martin's love interest, is recovering from a recent car accident. Though physically unharmed, she is dealing with the emotional aftermath of the traumatic experience.
As the episode progresses, Martin navigates the various health woes of his patients while also attempting to reconcile his own feelings for Louisa. Along the way, he is forced to confront his own fears and insecurities, both as a doctor and as a man.
Through it all, the residents of Portwenn band together to support each other in times of sickness and in health. Though their problems may be varied and complex, they find comfort in the knowledge that they are not alone in their struggles.
