Diebuster, also known as Gunbuster 2, is an anime series that aired in Japan in 2004. It is a six-episode sequel to the classic 1988 OVA series, Gunbuster. Diebuster was directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki and produced by Studio Gainax. It was later licensed for distribution in the United States by Bandai Entertainment and was recently added to the RetroCrush streaming service.
The series takes place in a distant future where humanity has expanded its reach beyond the solar system, traveling through hyperspace using giant robots called Buster Machines. The main character is a girl named Nono, who dreams of one day becoming a pilot of a Buster Machine. She lives in a small town on Earth and works as a waitress at a local diner.
The story begins when Nono meets a girl named Lal'C Melk Mark, who is a pilot of the Buster Machine Dix-Neuf. Lal'C is part of an elite team of pilots called the Fraternity, who are tasked with protecting humanity from space monsters called the Space Monsters. Lal'C is initially dismissive of Nono but sees potential in her when she shows off her physical abilities.
As the series progresses, Nono becomes more involved with Lal'C and the Fraternity. She meets new friends and faces intense battles against the Space Monsters. Through these battles, Nono learns the true nature of the Space Monsters and how they relate to the Buster Machines.
Diebuster has a distinct visual style that sets it apart from other anime series. The character designs were done by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who also worked on Neon Genesis Evangelion. The animation is fluid and dynamic, featuring impressive action scenes and gorgeous backgrounds. The series also uses a lot of bright colors and abstract shapes, giving it a trippy, psychedelic feel.
The series is anchored by the performances of its two lead voice actresses: Maaya Sakamoto (who plays Nono) and Yukari Fukui (who plays Lal'C). Both actresses bring a lot of energy and emotion to their roles, helping to sell the show's more outlandish moments. Sakamoto in particular does an excellent job of portraying Nono's boundless enthusiasm and determination.
Diebuster is a show that wears its influences on its sleeve. It is loaded with references to other classic anime series like Gundam, Macross, and, most obviously, the original Gunbuster. Fans of those series will enjoy spotting all the nods and homages throughout the show. At the same time, however, Diebuster feels fresh and original. It has a unique tone and style that sets it apart from other mecha anime.
Overall, Diebuster is a fast-paced, action-packed anime series that delivers plenty of thrills and excitement. Its cast of colorful characters, stunning visuals, and pulse-pounding soundtrack make it a must-watch for fans of mecha anime. While it may not be for everyone, those who give it a chance will likely find themselves drawn into its strange and captivating world.
