This is my letter to the World is the fourth episode of Dickinson’s third season. In this episode, Emily is focused on getting her poetry published and works on creating the perfect submission. As she struggles with writer's block, she also must navigate the ever-changing dynamic between her and Sue. Meanwhile, Austin and Sue's marriage hits a rough patch as they struggle to balance their personal lives and business ventures.
Emily starts the episode excited to have finally finished a new poem that she believes is her best yet. However, when she reads it to her family, they don't quite understand the meaning behind the words, and Emily becomes frustrated. She turns to her friend, Sam, for advice, but he suggests that she needs to put herself out there more if she wants to be taken seriously as a poet.
Determined to get her work published, Emily sets out to create the perfect submission to a literary magazine. She spends hours agonizing over every word, and revises her work multiple times until she feels satisfied. However, her efforts are thwarted when the magazine rejects her submission. Devastated, Emily turns to her mentor, Dr. Samuel Bowles, for advice and encouragement.
As Emily struggles with writer's block and rejection, she also has to navigate the complicated relationship between her and Sue. Despite the fact that they are still living together and collaborating on their literary magazine, tensions arise as they begin to realize that they want different things out of their professional and personal lives. Emily feels like Sue is holding her back creatively, while Sue is frustrated that Emily doesn't take her advice seriously.
On the other side of town, Austin and Sue's marriage is also hitting a rough patch. Austin is feeling overwhelmed with his responsibilities at work and at home, and he struggles to balance them both. Sue, meanwhile, is frustrated that Austin isn't taking her input seriously when it comes to running their business. As tensions rise between them, they both begin to wonder if they're truly meant to be together.
Throughout the episode, Emily continues to work on her poetry and eventually, she starts to find her voice again. With the encouragement of Dr. Bowles, she begins to submit her work to other magazines and journals in the hopes of getting published. As the episode comes to a close, Emily once again finds hope in her writing and in herself.
