Dexter season 5 episode 1 "My Bad" begins with the aftermath of the traumatizing events of the previous season's finale. Dexter is reeling from the loss of his wife, Rita, and is struggling to come to terms with the fact that he could not save her, as he is a forensic analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department by day and a vigilante serial killer by night.
As the episode progresses, we see flashes of Dexter's grief as he tries to maintain a semblance of normalcy at work. He is haunted by memories of Rita and his past victims, including his own brother, who was once also a serial killer. Meanwhile, his sister, Debra, is also coping with the aftermath of her own traumatic event - the discovery that the man she had been seeing was actually a serial killer.
In the midst of all this, Dexter finds himself drawn to a new character - Lumen Pierce - who has been kidnapped, tortured, and sexually assaulted by a group of men. Lumen has survived the ordeal and is looking to take matters into her own hands by seeking revenge on her abusers. Dexter sees himself in her and decides to help her, even though it means putting himself in danger.
The episode also introduces us to several other new characters, including Lumen's father, an attorney who is trying to protect his daughter, and Quinn's new girlfriend, who is already causing tension between him and Debra. We also see the return of some familiar faces, including Masuka, Batista, and Angel, who are all trying to help Dexter cope in their own ways.
Throughout the episode, we see Dexter struggling with his dual identities as both a killer and a grieving husband. He is constantly asking himself if he could have done something differently to prevent Rita's death, and whether he can truly continue to be both a killer and a family man. These introspective moments are contrasted with scenes of intense violence and suspense, as Dexter and Lumen work to take down her abusers and keep themselves out of harm's way.
Overall, "My Bad" sets the stage for an intense and emotional season of Dexter. The episode tackles themes of grief, guilt, and the blurred lines between justice and revenge. It also introduces us to several new characters who are sure to play important roles in the rest of the season. Fans of the show will not be disappointed with this gripping and thought-provoking premiere.
