The episode begins with Dexter preparing for his sister Deborah's (Jennifer Carpenter) promotion to detective. He goes to the station to meet her, but they’re immediately interrupted by a blood spatter expert, who has been called in for a crime scene.
As soon as Dexter arrives at the crime scene, he realizes that the killer had created the scene specifically for him. He follows the clues and it leads him to a young boy who had witnessed the murder. Dexter decides to take the boy under his wing and helps him escape from the killer.
Meanwhile, a new prosecutor named Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits) has come into town, and Dexter finds himself drawn to him due to his ruthless nature.
