Devils is a financial thriller television series from CW, following the story of Massimo Ruggero (Alessandro Borghi), a young and talented banker who eventually finds himself entangled in a web of conspiracy, corruption, and manipulation that rocks the world of high finance. The show is set in the glamorous and cutthroat world of global finance, where the stakes are always high, and fortunes can be made and lost in an instant.
The series starts with Massimo proudly leading the trading at the New York Continental Bank, where he strives towards success, and his hard work and talent are widely recognized. However, he becomes the fall guy in a disastrous trading maneuver that drives the bank to brink of collapse. Massimo sees himself being a pawn in a larger conspiracy and starts digging deeper, obsessed with finding the culprit behind his downfall.
One of the highlights of the show is the interaction between Massimo and Dominic Morgan (Patrick Dempsey), the CEO of the bank and Massimo's mentor, who has a surprise resignation that leaves everyone shocked, and who may or may not be connected to the conspiracy that's unraveling. Morgan is charming, manipulative, and has a dark past, which makes him enigmatic and leaves the audience guessing.
Other compelling characters in the series include Sofia Flores (Kasia Smutniak), a smart and ruthless head of trading at the bank who challenges Massimo's ambitions and secretly maneuvers behind the scenes; Carrie Price (Laia Costa), Massimo's romantic interest, who is also a journalist with a hidden agenda; Oliver Harris (Malachi Kirby), Massimo's colleague and friend, who supports him against all odds, and who also discovers a conspiracy of his own; and Vicky Poole (Pia Mechler), a brilliant mathematician who works with Massimo to create an algorithm that will revolutionize trading, but also threatens some of the old ways of banking.
The show is both character-driven and plot-driven, packed with suspense, twists, and turns that keep the audience on edge. The writing is sharp, intelligent, and engaging, with a mix of drama, thriller, and romance. The production design is impeccable, creating a sense of opulence and grandeur, with stunning locations of London, New York, and Rome.
The series also explores the dark underbelly of the financial world, highlighting the ethical dilemmas and conflicts of interest that arise in banking, the ruthless competition that drives the markets, and the impact that the actions of a few can have on the lives of many. The show delves into issues such as market manipulation, insider trading, political corruption, and the power dynamics between the banks and the regulators.
The acting in Devils is superb, with Alessandro Borghi delivering a compelling performance as Massimo, who undergoes a transformation from a hero to an anti-hero, as his obsession leads him on a dangerous quest for justice. Patrick Dempsey is delightful as the seductive and cunning Dominic Morgan, commanding the screen with his presence. Kasia Smutniak is impressive as the cold and calculating Sofia, bringing depth to her character despite playing the antagonist. Other actors in the supporting cast also add to the richness of the show, bringing a range of nuance and emotion to their roles.
Overall, Devils is an enthralling and sophisticated thriller that explores the intricate dynamics of the financial world and the human psyche. The combination of smart writing, exceptional acting, and sleek production makes for an excellent viewing experience that will leave the audience craving for more.
