Detroit Metal City is a comedy anime that aired in 2008 based on the manga series of the same name by Kiminori Wakasugi. It follows the life of Soichi Negishi, a kind-hearted and timid college student who dreams of becoming a pop musician and singing about love and peace. However, he leads a double life as Johannes Krauser II, the frontman of the death metal band, Detroit Metal City.
The show is set in Tokyo and follows Soichi as he struggles to balance his desire for a peaceful life with his passion for death metal music. In Detroit Metal City, Soichi transforms into Krauser, a vulgar and violent singer whose lyrics are full of profanity, violence and sexual references. Although he makes it clear that he hates being part of the band, he still finds himself constantly drawn back to it as Krauser's popularity grows.
Throughout the show, Soichi faces various obstacles as he tries to keep his dual life a secret from his family and friends. Meanwhile, Krauser's popularity continues to skyrocket, putting Soichi's two worlds on the brink of colliding.
The show is full of over-the-top humor and ridiculous situations. The contrast between Soichi's gentle personality and Krauser's hyper-masculine and violent persona provide plenty of opportunities for comedic moments. The supporting characters in the show also add to the humor, from Soichi's overly upbeat and cheerful girlfriend, to the members of Detroit Metal City, who are all equally absurd.
One of the most unique aspects of Detroit Metal City is the music. The soundtrack is a mix of traditional death metal songs and cheesy pop ballads, which perfectly fit the show's contrasting themes. The death metal music is surprisingly well done, with Krauser's vocals being voiced by Japanese metal singer, Yasuyuki Okamura. It's a bold move to mix genres in such a way, but it works exceptionally well in the context of the show.
Overall, Detroit Metal City is an absurd and hilarious anime that stands out thanks to its unique blend of genres, memorable characters and a great sense of humor. The show is perfect for those who enjoy off-beat comedies and don't mind a healthy dose of crude humor. While it's not for everyone, those who appreciate the show's brand of humor will undoubtedly find themselves laughing out loud and tapping their feet to the surprisingly catchy death metal tunes.
