In "Kids Ain't Like Everybody Else," the third episode of the fifth season of Desperate Housewives, the characters continue to navigate their complicated personal lives while also dealing with dramatic and surprising events. As always, the show offers a blend of humor, suspense, and emotional depth as it explores the inner workings of a suburban community.
One of the main plotlines of the episode involves Lynette (Felicity Huffman) and Tom (Doug Savant), who are struggling to deal with their teenage son Porter's (Charlie Carver) rebellious behavior. Porter has gotten involved with a troubled girl named Anne Schilling (Maiara Walsh), and his parents are worried about the impact that this relationship could have on his future. Meanwhile, Porter's twin brother Preston (also played by Charlie Carver) is also causing trouble of his own by rebelling against his mother's attempts to keep him on a strict diet.
Elsewhere in the neighborhood, Gabrielle (Eva Longoria) discovers that her daughter Juanita (Madison De La Garza) has developed an eating disorder. Gabrielle tries to keep this a secret from her husband Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chavira) but finds that she can't keep the truth hidden for long. Meanwhile, Bree (Marcia Cross) is still adjusting to life as a widow following her husband Orson's (Kyle MacLachlan) departure. She decides to try online dating but finds that the experience is much more difficult and complicated than she anticipated.
Another major plotline of the episode involves Edie Britt (Nicollette Sheridan), who is still reeling from her breakup with Carlos. She decides to try to seduce Dave Williams (Neal McDonough), the new neighbor who seems to be hiding a dark secret. However, Edie quickly realizes that Dave may not be as interested in her as she thought he was, and that his attention may be focused on someone else entirely.
Throughout the episode, there are also numerous smaller subplots and character moments that highlight the show's strong writing and ensemble cast. For example, Susan (Teri Hatcher) and Mike (James Denton) deal with the aftermath of their car accident and must decide whether or not to hire a lawyer. Meanwhile, Mrs. McCluskey (Kathryn Joosten) discovers that her late husband had a secret daughter, and tries to come to terms with this shocking revelation.
As always, Desperate Housewives manages to balance humor and drama in a way that keeps viewers hooked from beginning to end. Whether it's Lynette's struggles with her rebellious sons, Gabrielle's efforts to keep Juanita's eating disorder hidden, or Bree's misadventures in online dating, the show manages to find a way to make even the most difficult and dramatic situations feel relatable and engaging. With its talented cast, clever writing, and entertaining mix of emotions and thrills, "Kids Ain't Like Everybody Else" is another excellent episode of this beloved and long-running series.
