In Designing Women season 4 episode 21, entitled "Tough Enough," the ladies of Sugarbaker & Associates face some tough challenges both personally and professionally. Julia Sugarbaker (played by Dixie Carter) is dealing with her sister Suzanne's (played by Delta Burke) impending marriage to her ex-husband, J.D. Shackelford (played by Richard Gilliland). Meanwhile, Mary Jo Shively (played by Annie Potts) is struggling with the fact that her son, Quint, is growing up and becoming more independent.
The episode starts off with Julia and Suzanne at odds over Suzanne's upcoming nuptials. Julia is trying to keep her emotions in check, but it's clear that she's not happy with J.D. marrying her sister. Suzanne, on the other hand, is blissfully unaware of Julia's feelings and is excited to start a new chapter in her life. As the two sisters argue, they are interrupted by Mary Jo, who is dealing with her own set of problems.
Mary Jo's son, Quint, has just started dating a girl named Heather who is a bit of a troublemaker. Mary Jo is worried about Quint getting into trouble and tries to talk to him about it, but he doesn't want to listen. This leads to a heated argument between mother and son, with Mary Jo feeling helpless and frustrated.
Meanwhile, Charlene Frazier Stillfield (played by Jean Smart) is dealing with a difficult client who wants her to design a high-end hotel with a limited budget. Charlene tries to reason with the client, but he won't budge on his demands. Charlene turns to Julia for advice, who tells her to stand her ground and not let the client take advantage of her.
As the episode unfolds, the ladies of Sugarbaker & Associates face more challenges, both big and small. They argue, they laugh, they cry, but at the end of the day, they always have each other's backs. "Tough Enough" is a heartwarming episode that showcases the strong bonds of friendship and family that exist among the women of Sugarbaker & Associates.
