In season 1, episode 5 of Desert Punk, titled "The Price of Water," we see our protagonist Kanta find himself in a desperate situation when his water supply runs dangerously low. In the world of Desert Punk, water is a scarce and valuable resource, with many people willing to go to extreme lengths to obtain it. Kanta is no exception, and we see him resort to all sorts of unsavory tactics to get his hands on enough water to survive.
The episode opens with Kanta and his sidekick, the scantily-clad Junko, trudging through the desert wasteland on their way to a small town where they hope to restock their dwindling water supply. As they approach the town, they are ambushed by a group of bandits who steal their water and leave them stranded in the scorching sun. With no other options, Kanta and Junko are forced to search for water in the unforgiving desert.
Their search leads them to a small oasis where they meet a group of women who have been tasked with guarding the precious water supply. Kanta and Junko soon learn that the town they were headed to is engaged in a bitter war with a neighboring town over control of the oasis. The women, who are from the rival town, have been sent to guard the oasis and prevent their enemies from gaining control of it.
Kanta sees an opportunity to make some quick cash by selling information about the oasis to the warring towns, but he soon realizes that the women are not the pushovers he thought they were. They are skilled fighters and are willing to do whatever it takes to protect their water supply, even if it means sacrificing their own lives.
As Kanta and Junko spend more time with the women, they begin to see things from their perspective and understand the importance of protecting the oasis. They also learn that the real cost of water is not measured in dollars, but in the lives that are lost in the struggle to control it. Kanta's morality is tested when he is faced with the decision to betray the women and sell them out to the highest bidder or stand by his principles and help them protect their water.
Throughout the episode, we see Kanta's trademark humor and irreverence, but we also get a glimpse of the more serious, philosophical side of his character. The desert world in which he lives is harsh and unforgiving, and he is forced to make difficult choices in order to survive. "The Price of Water" is a powerful exploration of the value of life and the lengths people will go to in order to obtain what they need to survive.
