Maya is back in full force trying to make a statement in episode 3 of Degrassi: Next Class season 2. With her sights set on standing up for animal rights, she finds unexpected allies in Vijay and Goldi. However, her passion for animal rights seems to distract her from the fact that she has white privilege and her own prejudices, which she has trouble recognizing.
The episode starts with Maya's plans to protest the zoo coming to fruition. She is joined by Vijay and Goldi in an effort to raise awareness about the harm and unethical treatment of animals in captivity. But, when Maya decides to take her activism up a notch and break into the zoo at night, things start to get complicated.
Maya is determined to expose the way animals are treated and she believes that breaking into the zoo will help her raise awareness. However, things don't go according to plan, and the trio find themselves in a tricky situation, locked in a cage. It's here that Maya begins to see a different perspective on her activism and the privilege she holds.
Back at school, Maya continues to struggle with acknowledging her privilege, and she inadvertently hurts a fellow student who is from a lower-income background. Though she doesn't intend to hurt her, Maya makes it clear that she doesn't understand the struggles that the other student goes through to make ends meet. This incident serves as a reality check for Maya, and she starts to realize that her privilege has blinded her from the struggles of other people.
Meanwhile, in other parts of the school, Lola and Shay are preparing for an upcoming dance competition, and Lola is struggling to keep up with the rigorous practice. Her mother, a former ballerina, pressures her to perform better and forces Lola to face her own insecurities about dancing.
On the other hand, Shay is dealing with the fact that she can't get a dance partner since Tiny has left school. She's convinced that her weight is the reason she can't find a partner, but her friends come together to help her realize that it's about her personality and not looks.
As the episode progresses, we see how various issues and perspectives collide and become interconnected. The message of the episode is to check your privilege and understand the struggles of others. Degrassi: Next Class season 2 episode 3 is a powerful episode that emphasizes the importance of acknowledging privilege and understanding the hardships of those around us. It's an eye-opener for Maya and a reminder for others to see the world from different perspectives.
