After 17 episodes full of suspense, action, and thrill, Death Note Season 1 Episode 18 "Comrade" keeps up the momentum with even more suspense, twists, and unexpected turns. The episode starts with a new character – an FBI agent named Raye Penber – who has been assigned to investigate the Kira case. Penber, who is accompanied by his fiancé, also gets on the same train as Light, unaware that he is Kira himself.
The two start a polite conversation, and Light takes advantage of the situation, using the Death Note to kill Penber. Unfortunately for Light, Penber had planned for an attack, and his death is only the beginning of a new investigation. And that's when things start to get even more interesting.
In "Comrade," there's a lot of back and forth between the police officers investigating the Kira case and Light, who is essentially the killer they're trying to catch. The episode brings another twist to the storyline, as one of the people Light had killed previously, a devoted FBI agent named Agent Lind L. Taylor, is revealed to have been posing as Kira openly on national television, baiting the real Kira to kill him. Light had cleverly gotten rid of Taylor previously, but now his efforts have been nullified.
The plan was simple: after Taylor's public appearance as Kira, the team would be able to trace the signal to their location, leading to a swift arrest. But when Light and L hear about it, they decide to set a trap for the FBI instead. By the end of the episode, almost half of the FBI team has been killed, while L manages to escape unharmed.
The episode also explores the relationship between Misa and Light. Misa, who is another Kira, seems to be smitten with Light and is ready to do anything for him. In return, Light also shows some interest in her, but his focus is still on his master plan. He manages to use Misa's powers to get valuable information about L, helping him stay one step ahead of the investigation team. However, Light's attitude towards women also comes into play, as he refuses to work with a female member of the task force.
The contrast between Light's intelligence and L's intuition is more pronounced in "Comrade." L, as the world's greatest detective, has an uncanny ability to predict Kira's actions. Even though Light has the ability to kill people by just writing their names in the Death Note, he needs to plan every move carefully, making sure that L doesn't suspect him. L, on the other hand, seems to be able to predict Light's every move, always one step ahead. This episode shows how the two characters are constantly trying to outsmart each other, neither willing to give an inch.
Overall, "Comrade" is an action-packed episode, with enough excitement and thrill to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. It offers more insight into the minds of both Light and L, giving a glimpse of their thought process and how they go about their work. It also introduces new characters and situations that add to the overall storyline, making it more complex and intriguing. If you're a fan of the death penalty, crime dramas, and psychological thrillers, you won't want to miss this episode.
