Light Yagami, a bored and extremely intelligent high school student, discovers a strange notebook named Death Note lying on the ground. After reading the instructions written on the notebook, Light realizes that whoever's name is written in the book will die. At first skeptical, he tests the power of the Death Note by killing a criminal that was being broadcasted on the news. When the death occurs as written in the notebook, Light realizes that it's real.
Light decides to use the notebook to kill criminals and create a better world without them. With the help of the Death Note's supernatural power, he plans to rid the world of all criminals that he deems unworthy of living. However, there are people who are against his cause in the form of investigators working for the police.
On the other hand, the story shifts to the Shinigami who dropped the Death Note in the human world. Ryuk, a terrifying creature from the world of the dead, is a death god who's been bored in the Shinigami world. When he drops the Death Note in the human world, he waits in the shadows to see what will happen with the notebook.
Ryuk watches as Light tests the power of the notebook on a criminal, and he approaches Light surprised at his unexpected use of the Death Note. Ryuk explains the abilities and rules of the notebook to Light and states that the Death Note was only meant for any Shinigami's amusement. Initially, Light is afraid and unsure of Ryuk's intentions but realizes that Ryuk is only there as a spectator, and cannot interfere with his actions.
As Light and Ryuk continue to work together, the police and mysterious figure known only as L begin to investigate the series of unexplained deaths that are taking place. L, an eccentric and brilliant detective, soon realizes that the deaths are connected, and someone is killing them using some supernatural means. L deduces that whoever is responsible is in Japan and starts his investigation.
The first episode sets the foundation for the storyline of the show and serves to introduce the pivotal characters, Light Yagami, Ryuk, and L. We see Light's initial hesitancy to take drastic measures to deal with the world's criminal elements and his gradual move towards becoming a vigilante. The introduction of Ryuk and L allows us to glimpse into the supernatural world of Shinigami and the detective's unique skills to solve crimes.
Rebirth is the perfect starting point for Death Note, as it establishes the premise and introduces the main characters in a well-lit manner. It has the perfect blend of intrigue, action, and suspense to keep you invested. The first episode sets up the stage for the rest of the series and concludes with an exciting cliffhanger that leaves us on edge. Death Note season 1 episode 1 guarantees that once started, the viewer will be drawn into the story and anxiously waiting for what will come next.
