In Death in Paradise season 4 episode 2, titled "Episode 2," DI Humphrey Goodman finds himself investigating the death of a high-stakes poker player in a seemingly impossible murder.
The episode opens on the luxurious yacht of world-famous poker player, Solly Stanton. However, the atmosphere quickly turns tense as the players at the table accuse each other of cheating. When Solly is found dead in the closed-off poker room, all the players become suspects in his murder. With the door locked from the inside and no sign of a struggle, Humphrey and his team are left baffled as to how the killer could have gotten in and out of the room.
The list of suspects is long and includes members of Solly's entourage, other poker players, and even his own daughter. Humphrey and his team initially believe the murder could have been a crime of passion, with one of the players lashing out in anger after losing at the table. However, as they begin to piece together the evidence, they soon realize there might be a more intricate web of motives at play.
While investigating, Humphrey also finds himself distracted by a budding romance with Martha, an old friend who has come to visit the island. This causes him to struggle to keep his focus on the case, and he makes a few mistakes that put his team in danger.
As the investigation progresses, the team begins to uncover a tangled web of secrets and lies surrounding Solly's life. They discover that the poker player was not as wealthy as everyone assumed, and he was facing mounting debts. They also find out that Solly had been secretly funding a local drug operation, and that his death may have been the result of a business deal gone wrong.
As the team delves deeper into the case, they begin to feel the pressure to solve it quickly, as more homicides are being committed. Finding out who the killer is becomes a race against time, as another murder is about to take place.
The episode is filled with tension and suspense, as Humphrey and his team struggle to unravel the mysteries surrounding Solly Stanton's death. It also perfectly balances the case's complexity with the personal struggles and relationships of the characters, and will keep viewers guessing until the very end.
