- March 15, 2021
In the season 1 episode 7 of Deadly Women titled "Charity is for Chumps," viewers are taken on a journey through the twisted minds of three women who use charity and goodwill as a guise to carry out their heinous crimes.
The first story centers around a woman named Anne Wharton, who uses her position as a social worker to prey on vulnerable young women. Under the guise of taking them under her wing and helping them escape their troubled pasts, Wharton lures her victims into her home and subjects them to horrific acts of physical and emotional abuse. Eventually, Wharton's dark past catches up with her, and she is sentenced to life in prison for her crimes.
The second story follows the case of Holly Harvey, a woman who was seemingly devoted to her job as a nurse and her involvement in charitable organizations. However, an investigation into a missing person's case leads law enforcement to uncover evidence linking Harvey to multiple murders. It is revealed that Harvey had been drugging her employers and elderly patients in order to steal from them before ultimately killing them for their assets. Harvey is eventually convicted of her crimes and sentenced to life in prison.
The final story centers around the case of Carol Bundy, whose seemingly altruistic actions stemmed from her desire to please her partner Douglas Clark, a serial killer. Bundy's involvement in Clark's crimes began innocently enough, with her offering him a place to stay and lending a hand in his various schemes. However, Bundy soon becomes far more involved, accompanying Clark on his killing sprees and even going so far as to lure victims to their deaths. Bundy is eventually caught and sentenced to death, though her sentence is later commuted to life in prison.
Throughout the episode, viewers are presented with the disturbing reality that even the most seemingly altruistic individuals can harbor dark and dangerous motives. Using their position as helpers and caretakers, these deadly women were able to carry out some of the most gruesome crimes in history. "Charity is for Chumps" is a chilling reminder that even those who claim to act in the interest of others should be viewed with a critical eye, as appearances can be deceiving.
