Johnny Smith (Anthony Michael Hall) returns in the hit show The Dead Zone for season 2, episode 3 titled "Ascent." Johnny's supernatural powers continue to grow as he navigates his way through life as a psychic, and this episode is no exception.
"Ascent" begins with Johnny having a nightmare about falling from a cliff. He awakens to find himself on a camping trip with his friends Sheriff Walt Bannerman (Chris Bruno) and Bruce Lewis (John L. Adams). Despite his reluctance to go camping, Johnny agreed to the trip to get away from the stress of his visions.
However, Johnny's relaxation is short-lived when he has another vision of a plane crash. This time, he sees a woman in peril, trapped and unable to escape the wreckage. Johnny struggles with the knowledge that he must prevent this disaster but is unsure how to do so.
The plane in question belongs to up-and-coming businessman Greg Stillson (Sean Patrick Flanery), who has made a name for himself with his political aspirations. With Greg on board the plane, Johnny realizes the stakes are high, and he must find a way to save everyone on board.
As the episode progresses, Johnny develops a kinship with the woman he saw in his vision. Despite his efforts to persuade her to stay away from the flight, she refuses to back down. Instead, she views her upcoming ascent as an opportunity to overcome her fear and gain control over her life.
Johnny, determined to save her, teams up with Sheriff Bannerman to prevent the plane from taking off. However, their efforts are thwarted when they discover a bomb onboard, placed by a disgruntled former employee of Greg's company.
The tension builds as Johnny and the passengers struggle to bypass the explosive device while the plane ascends higher into the air. As the situation becomes more dangerous, Johnny has another vision that may offer a solution to the crisis.
The episode concludes with a thrilling rescue and a new perspective for Johnny and the passengers. The plane lands safely, and Johnny's visions give a renewed sense of hope to those involved.
As always, "Ascent" is a thrilling episode of The Dead Zone that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The show's blend of supernatural abilities and real-world problems gives the series a unique and gripping tone that stands out from other shows in its genre.
