Johnny Smith, played by Anthony Michael Hall, is back again in the third episode of the first season of the American supernatural drama television series Dead Zone. This episode titled "Quality of Life" is directed by Rachel Talalay and written by Michael Piller.
The episode starts with Johnny participating in a community fundraiser event when he suddenly collapses on the floor. His ex-girlfriend Sarah, played by Nicole de Boer, rushes to his side and he sees a vision of Sarah being attacked. Johnny realizes that someone is trying to kill Sarah and he must race against time to stop the threat before it is too late.
As usual, Johnny uses his psychic powers to identify the attacker and he discovers that it is a young man named Tyler Connell who blames Sarah for his mother's death. Tyler believes that Sarah's work as a scientist led to his mother's cancer diagnosis and subsequent death. He also blames her for neglecting her research and failing to find a cure for cancer.
Johnny tries to reason with Tyler and convince him that what he is doing is wrong but Tyler is too blinded by his anger. Johnny then turns to Sarah and they work together to find a cure for cancer and prove Tyler wrong. It is revealed that Sarah had been working on a revolutionary new cancer treatment called Exogen, which uses nanotechnology to destroy cancer cells. The treatment has been successful in animal trials but she is struggling to get funding for human trials.
The story takes a dramatic turn when Tyler breaks into the lab and steals the Exogen treatment, threatening to expose it to the world if Sarah does not stop her research. He believes that the treatment will be more harmful than the cure and will lead to a new era of human suffering.
Johnny and Sarah then embark on a dangerous mission to stop Tyler and recover the Exogen treatment. They are joined by Johnny's close friend Bruce, played by John L. Adams, who works in the lab where Sarah's research is being conducted. Together they create a plan to stop Tyler and save the research from being destroyed.
The episode ends with a thrilling climax as Johnny and Tyler face off in a dramatic showdown. Johnny uses his powers to see multiple outcomes of the situation and ultimately makes a decision that saves both Tyler's life and the research.
Overall, "Quality of Life" is an exciting and thrilling episode that highlights the ethical dilemmas of scientific research and explores the theme of revenge and forgiveness. The episode also showcases the chemistry between Anthony Michael Hall's character Johnny and Nicole de Boer's character Sarah, hinting at a possible romantic relationship in the future. The episode ends on a hopeful note, with the Exogen treatment being saved and the possibility of human trials in the future.
