DC's Stargirl is a relatively new series that premiered on DC Universe in May of 2020. It's based on the comic book character Courtney Whitmore, who was created by Geoff Johns and Lee Moder. The show is executive produced by Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter, and it's the first original series from the DC Universe streaming service to also air on The CW.
The show begins with a group of superheroes known as the Justice Society of America (JSA) battling the villainous Injustice Society of America (ISA) in the 1940s. However, the JSA is ultimately defeated and most of its members are killed. The ISA is then able to take control of a powerful object called the Cosmic Staff, which gives its wielder immense control over energy.
In the present day, Courtney Whitmore (played by Brec Bassinger) moves from Los Angeles to the small town of Blue Valley, Nebraska, with her mother and stepfather. Courtney is initially unhappy about the move and resents her stepfather, Pat Dugan (played by Luke Wilson). However, she soon discovers that Pat was once the sidekick to the hero known as Starman, who was a member of the JSA. Pat also reveals that he's been secretly keeping many of Starman's old belongings, including the Cosmic Staff.
Courtney decides to take up the mantle of Stargirl and fight against the ISA, who are still active in Blue Valley. She recruits several other teenagers from her school to help her, including a boy named Yolanda Montez (played by Yvette Monreal), who becomes the new version of the hero Wildcat. The group also includes Beth Chapel (played by Anjelika Washington), who becomes the new Doctor Mid-Nite, and Rick Tyler (played by Cameron Gellman), who becomes the new Hourman.
Throughout the first season, Courtney and her team face off against various villains associated with the ISA, including Icicle (played by Neil Jackson), Sportsmaster (played by Neil Hopkins), and Tigress (played by Joy Osmanski). They also have to deal with the complications of being teenage superheroes, such as keeping their identities secret from their families and dealing with everyday high school drama.
One of the strengths of the show is its focus on the relationships between the characters. Courtney and Pat have a complex dynamic, as Pat is initially hesitant to let Courtney take up the mantle of Stargirl and put herself in danger. However, he ultimately becomes her mentor and partner in crime-fighting. Courtney's relationship with her stepbrother Mike Dugan (played by Trae Romano) is also a major part of the show, as Mike is initially jealous of Courtney's superhero exploits but eventually becomes more supportive.
The show also explores the personal lives of the other members of the team. Yolanda Montez, in particular, has a powerful character arc throughout the first season. She's initially seen as the perfect high school student, but it's eventually revealed that she was kicked out of her old school after a private photo of her was shared online. This storyline is handled with empathy and sensitivity, and it adds depth to Yolanda's character.
Another strong aspect of the show is its production values. The special effects are impressive, particularly in the way they bring the Cosmic Staff and other superhero gadgets to life. The fight choreography is also well-done, with dynamic and exciting action scenes.
Overall, DC's Stargirl is a fun and engaging show that should appeal to both comic book fans and those new to the world of superheroes. The show combines classic comic book themes with modern sensibilities, resulting in a show that feels fresh and exciting. The characters are well-developed, the action is thrilling, and the production values are top-notch. If you're looking for a superhero show with heart and humor, DC's Stargirl is definitely worth checking out.
