In Darker Than Black season 2 episode 5, titled "Gunsmoke Blows, Life Flows," the audience is introduced to a new character, Suou Pavlichenko, a Russian girl with the ability to transform into a weapon. Suou's world is turned upside down when she witnesses the assassination of her father, a former agent of the Russian Intelligence agency, by a masked man known as the "Owl." She is forced to flee to Tokyo with her twin brother, Shion, who is later kidnapped by the same man who killed her father.
Hei, our main protagonist and former contractor, finds himself entangled in Suou's problems when he is assigned to retrieve a meteor fragment that has fallen into Shion's possession. Hei discovers that the fragment can be used to generate massive amounts of energy and is wanted by various organizations, including the Public Security Bureau and a mysterious man with owl-like abilities.
As the episode progresses, Suou and Hei cross paths when she stumbles upon one of his missions. Suou's initial impression of Hei as a ruthless killer makes her wary of him and his intentions. However, as they work together to save her brother, she learns Hei's true character and becomes more open to trusting him.
As the episode draws to a close, Suou discovers the truth behind her father's assassination and the reason why her brother was taken. The revelation leads to a heart-wrenching decision that challenges Suou's understanding of herself and the world around her.
"Gunsmoke Blows, Life Flows" is a fast-paced and action-packed episode that introduces new characters and leaves the audience on the edge of their seats. The interactions between Suou and Hei provide an interesting dynamic that gives insight into their respective personas and creates a unique bond that carries throughout the season. The introduction of the meteor fragment adds to the overarching plotline and sets the tone for the rest of the season.
