Daniel Boone is a classic adventure series set in the late 1700s that follows the legendary pioneer and frontiersman as he explores the uncharted wilderness beyond the Appalachian Mountains. In season 2, episode 1, titled "Empire of the Lost," Daniel Boone (played by Fess Parker) and his loyal companions venture deep into the unknown territory of Kentucky in search of a Frenchman who may have information about a hidden treasure.
As the episode begins, Boone and his friend Yadkin (played by Albert Salmi) are hunting in the woods when they come across a mysterious stranger in French garb. The man is badly injured and delirious, babbling about a lost city of gold in the heart of the wilderness. Boone and Yadkin take the man back to their camp and nurse him back to health, hoping to learn more about his story.
Over the course of the episode, Boone and Yadkin piece together the Frenchman's tale of a lost expedition that set out from New Orleans in search of a fabled city of gold. The man, a cartographer named Dubois, was hired by the expedition to chart their progress as they made their way up the Mississippi River and into the heart of Kentucky. But the journey was fraught with danger, and the Frenchmen soon found themselves at the mercy of hostile native tribes, treacherous terrain, and deadly diseases.
Despite these setbacks, the expedition pressed on, driven by the promise of unimaginable wealth and glory. But as they ventured deeper into the wilderness, they were beset by more and more misfortunes, until finally they were forced to make camp on the banks of a remote river. It was there that they stumbled upon the ruins of an ancient city, long abandoned and overgrown by jungle.
Excited by their discovery, the Frenchmen set to work exploring the ruins and searching for treasure. But their excitement soon turned to horror as they discovered that they were not alone in the city. Lurking in the shadows were strange creatures unlike anything they had ever seen before – creatures that seemed to be guarding the city and its secrets with a sinister, malevolent intelligence.
As the weeks wore on, the Frenchmen began to succumb to madness and despair, driven to the brink of madness by their isolation, their hunger, and their fear. In the end, only a few of them remained, including Dubois, who managed to escape with a portion of the treasure and a map that he hoped would lead him back to the lost city.
Now, years later, Dubois is dying – but not before he can entrust his map to Boone and Yadkin, begging them to find the city and claim the remainder of the treasure for themselves. With nothing but the map and their own wits to guide them, Boone and Yadkin set out into the wilderness, determined to uncover the truth about the lost city of gold and the fate of its ill-fated discoverers.
