Cybill season 3 episode 5, titled "Cybill, Get Your Gun," follows the main character, Cybill, as she attempts to boost her self-confidence and independence by learning how to use a gun.
Cybill has been feeling down lately, as both her acting career and personal life seem to be in a bit of a rut. She's been relying heavily on her ex-husband, Ira, for emotional support, but even he can't seem to snap her out of her funk. That is, until Ira suggests she take a gun safety class.
At first, Cybill is hesitant. She's never been particularly interested in guns, and the idea of handling one makes her nervous. But Ira insists that it will be a good way for her to feel more empowered and in control of her life.
Cybill reluctantly agrees, and soon finds herself in a class with a group of other women, all of whom are there for different reasons. Some are interested in self-defense, while others are looking to get in touch with their "Wild West" side. Cybill is the only one who seems to be there solely for personal growth.
The class is led by a gruff but knowledgeable instructor named Hank, who wastes no time in putting the women through their paces. He starts with the basics, teaching them about gun safety and proper technique. At first, Cybill struggles to keep up, but soon finds herself getting the hang of it.
As the class progresses, Cybill starts to feel a sense of pride in her newfound skills. She even convinces her friends Maryann and Zoey to come to the shooting range with her, where she impresses them with her accuracy.
But as Cybill becomes more confident in her abilities, she also starts to become more aware of the dangers of guns. She begins to question why so many people feel the need to own them, and worries about what might happen if she or someone else were to accidentally discharge one.
This internal conflict comes to a head when Cybill finds herself in a situation where she feels threatened. She reaches for her gun out of instinct, only to realize that she doesn't actually want to use it. She comes to the conclusion that while learning how to handle a gun may have helped her feel more in control, it hasn't necessarily made her a better or more secure person.
In the end, Cybill decides to give her gun away, but not before using it to make a statement. She shows up to a party with it slung over her shoulder, causing a stir among her friends and acquaintances. When they ask why she's carrying a gun, she responds that it's because she can, before handing it off to a shocked Maryann.
The episode ends with Cybill feeling liberated by letting go of her gun, and perhaps even more confident than she did before. While the experience may not have been exactly what she was expecting, it taught her an important lesson about the power and responsibility that comes with being in possession of a firearm.
