George and the Man with the Yellow Hat visit the zoo at night and meet some of the nocturnal animals, while Ted is tasked with taking care of Charkie, a mischievous Yorkshire terrier who gets loose and runs wild in the city. As George explores the zoo after dark, he discovers that the animals are quite different from what he's used to seeing during the daytime. The zookeeper explains to George and the Man that these nocturnal animals often behave differently under the cover of darkness and that many of them are quite active at night. George is particularly fascinated by the bats, who use echolocation to navigate in the dark.
Meanwhile, back in the city, Ted is having a tough time keeping up with Charkie, who proves to be quite the escape artist. She slips out of her collar and runs off into the night, leading Ted on a wild chase through the streets of the city. Ted finally catches up with her in a park, where he is able to lure her back with some dog treats.
Back at the zoo, George meets a pair of playful otters, who are very active and energetic at night. He also learns about some of the special adaptations that nocturnal animals have, such as larger eyes and more sensitive hearing. George is amazed by how much he has learned during his nighttime visit to the zoo.
The episode ends with George and Ted returning home with a sleepy Charkie, who has finally been tamed. George is excited to share all of his new knowledge with his friends, and Ted is just happy that he was able to survive his night with Charkie. Overall, "Zoo Night / Charkie Escapes" is an exciting episode of Curious George that takes viewers on a fun-filled adventure through a zoo at night and the streets of the city.
