Larry David, the co-creator of Seinfeld, stars in this witty and off-kilter series that explores the neurotic side of life in Los Angeles. After a three-year hiatus, the fourth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm sees Larry back at it again, getting himself into awkward situations with his typical no-filter personality.
In the season opener, "Mel's Offer," Larry is offered a role in "Mel Brooks' new Broadway Musical," but things go awry when he decides to bring Jeff's (Jeff Garlin) trapeze artist girlfriend along to the meeting. The awkwardness only amplifies when Larry realizes he can't get out of the engagement with the woman, and the entanglement with her causes trouble throughout the episode.
As per usual, Larry offends just about every person he encounters on his various errands throughout the episode. He starts by trying to get a refund on a defective cell phone, but he ends up getting stuck helping out the store attendant with his personal issues instead. Larry's good deed backfires when he tries to get out of a dinner date with the man's severely disabled son, which proves to be an impossible task.
Next, Larry is seen at the hair salon, arguing with his hairdresser about the "chatting while cutting" policy. When Larry is forced to engage in conversation, he becomes enraged when he hears the hairdresser claim that she's also a therapist—with no credentials to back it up. The situation escalates, and Larry grabs a pair of scissors to take matters into his own hands, causing the salon to call the police.
Meanwhile, Larry's best friend, Jeff, is struggling with his relationship with his girlfriend, whom he met at his daughter's Bat Mitzvah. Larry has a hard time being supportive of his friend, as Jeff is dating a trapeze artist who uses her act to simulate sex in front of the audience. Larry finds himself unintentionally offending Jeff's girlfriend throughout the episode, which adds to the already mounting tensions in their relationship.
The episode reaches its climax as Larry meets Mel Brooks at his office to discuss the musical role. When Larry brings Jeff's girlfriend, the meeting takes an unexpected turn, and things quickly spiral out of control. What follows is a hilarious but cringe-worthy chain of events, as Larry becomes even more embroiled in his utterly absurd situation.
Overall, "Mel's Offer" is a clever and hilarious start to a season that doesn't offer any shortage of laughs. As always, the show's uniquely awkward brand of humor keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, and the characters' witty banter and absurd situations are as humorous as ever. If you're a fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm, make sure to check out the fourth season opener, as it's not one to miss.
